1. Spoons

According to relationship psychologist Corrine Sweet, only 18% of couples actually spoon at night—a relatively small percentage. According to Sweet, this position puts one person "in a protective role over the other." Body language expert Patti Wood adds that it's a sign of trust from a small spoon to the big one.

2. Free spoon

The free spoon is essentially the same as the spoon, but it allows for some shifting rather than a position where the partners are close together. Especially couples who have just started dating will stick closer to each other, but the loose spoon starts to appear when the couple is together a little longer. Paul Rosenblatt, author of Two in a Bed: The Couple's Social System, states that this is a good position for optimal sleep. Wood again adds that this is still a sign of a protective bond between the two partners.

3. Chase

Although it sounds difficult, this position starts just like a spoon. This represents one person lying on the side of the bed while the other rolls over to that person. Essentially, this means that the first person is "driven" to the side of the bed. According to Samuel Dunkell, who wrote Sleep Positions: Nocturnal Body Language, it's possible that the person being chased needs some personal space.

4. Weave

The intertwined couple was literally entangled with each other, lying facing each other. This position does not occur often but sometimes occurs after the couple has just made love or is at the beginning of their relationship. Some couples will continue to sleep in weave, but psychotherapist Elizabeth Flynn Campbell warns that this is not always a good sign. “Perhaps this couple pays too much attention to each other and depends too much on each other to sleep separately.”

5. Unraveled

This means that two people will fall asleep as described above: intertwined. However, after a minute or ten, both partners will roll to their side of the bed. Only about 8% of couples sleep like this, and it's a much better alternative than sleeping in a weave. “It’s a compromise between intimacy and independence. This position is the sweet spot,” says relationship psychologist Corrin Sweet.

6. Lovers of freedom

This position means that you and your partner lie facing each other while sleeping next to each other, and your backs are not touching. Sweet explains that this is a popular sleeping position, with approximately 27 percent of couples sleeping in this position. According to her, this shows that couples feel connected, but at the same time, they are confident in their relationship and independent.
