Unusual rocks in Australia

Unusual rocks are one of the most famous symbols of Kangaroo Island in Australia. They rise 60 meters above the crashing waves in Flinders Chase National Park, over the west side of Kangaroo Island. It is a collection of huge eroded granite boulders that rise above a lava dome. The boulders have been shaped by wind, sea water and rain for over 500 million years.

1. Golden-orange lichens covering some of the rocks and a variety of forms offer tourists plenty of photo opportunities at any time of the day.

2. The rocks are made of granite, which was found in the earth's crust during the Ordovician period, about 500 million years ago.

3. At that time, Kangaroo Island was part of Gondwana, a supercontinent in the southern hemisphere that also included Australia, South America, Africa, India, and Antarctica.

4. About 150 million years ago, Gondwana began to separate into the continents that now exist.

6. Through pre-formed gaps and some rapidly wearing minerals, such as feldspar and mica, the wear process began.
