Fast food chain McDonald's restaurants in China have received a new poetic name. Now the network is called "Jin Gong Men" (Jingongmen), which translates as "Golden Arches".

Before that, the company was called Maidanglao, which did not carry any specific meaning and was just a transcription of the name of the restaurant from English into Chinese.

It is noted that the new version caused a contradictory reaction of visitors. Some believe that now McDonald's sounds in Chinese like the name of a furniture salon and makes consumers doubt the edibility of dishes. From the point of view of other users, the new name is not suitable for a foreign brand and is rather similar to the name of a state-owned enterprise in China. The third word "Jin Gong Men" cuts the ear.

The representative office of the network in Shanghai explained that the renaming only concerns the name of the company registered in China, but not its brand, both the signs and the menu remained the same.

Last summer, McDonald's announced the sale of 80% of its business in China. The buyers were the Chinese state investment corporation CITIC Group and the American investment fund Carlyle Group. The agreement will be valid for 20 years.

The new company, which is now called Golden Arches China Management Limited, will be the largest McDonald's franchise outside the United States. Like in Russia, McDonald's came to China in the early 1990s. Currently, there are about 2,400 chain restaurants in mainland China and 240 in Hong Kong. In the next five years, China plans to open another fifteen hundred institutions.
