The largest dog meat market will be closed in South Korea
Pet lovers have reason to rejoice: one of the largest dog meat markets is being closed in South Korea. "Starting with the elimination of equipment for processing animals and cages in the market, in the future we will stop the sale of dog meat in the Moran market," Kang Won—gu, a representative of the Seongnam city authorities, told The Korea Herald. Every year, up to 80 thousand dogs were sold in this market in live and killed form. The market share was 33% of the total volume of dog meat consumed in South Korea.

Seongnam Mayor Lee Jae-myung quoted Mahatma Gandhi as saying, "Seongnam will take the initiative to transform the image of South Korea, since the greatness of the nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way it treats animals."

Zhang Ying-yong, a representative of the Korean Animal Welfare Association, commented on the good news as follows: "Seongnam has thus made a big step towards changing the dog meat industry… But we will need to constantly monitor the dog meat shops in the market to see if they have really stopped killing dogs and are changing their business."

Moran Market was infamous to animal rights activists around the world because of the brutal methods of killing dogs, which included electroshock, hanging and even beatings to death.
