By Vika https://mail.pictolic.com/article/my-13-self-portraits-showcasing-a-tiny-version-of-me-in-a-world-of-big-things.htmlIn 2020, a bored young lady decided to make herself pocket-sized using an app.
Having grown up watching movies like 'Honey,' 'I Shrunk the Kids,' and 'Alice in Wonderland,' the idea of being small in a world of big things has intrigued me. After following some creatives' works (such as Joel Robison) on Instagram, I was further inspired to attempt to create scenes exploring what it might be like to be only a few inches tall. Additionally, using conceptual art, as well as surreal/manipulated art, brought more emotional depth and intrigue to the images.

To execute a scene and achieve the desired effect, I learned to pay attention to two major details: lighting and angles. First, I created the setting with a clear idea of where I would place myself. After choosing an angle, I took the photo. Then, using the same lighting (or lighting I could match in editing) and matching angle, I took the photo of myself. Specifically, in the photos where I appear to be behind glass, adjusting the opacity was key. To achieve different moods, I adjusted the lighting, but only after the images were taken.

The thought of learning to use Photoshop always daunted me. Instead, I found other tools that did the trick without the big learning curve. Still, when it comes to learning anything new (especially when you’re teaching yourself), there will be challenges. I found that some ideas did not turn out the way I hoped, and some did not work at all. One of the posted images lacks an obviously needed shadow. You have to learn to be just as creative in problem-solving. The way to overcome challenges is to practice and push beyond what you already know to find a solution.

I enjoyed learning to create/create these mini-me images and will continue to make more if inspiration strikes. I've also loved trying out many different concepts, themes, and ideas that are posted on my Instagram. Truly, I do not see myself stopping my exploration of photography or artistry at any time in the future.
