"Jump into the saddle and fly standing up": standing places will appear in low-cost airlines

Standing places for budget air transportation. The Italian company has developed a new concept, and it is already going to be implemented by low-cost airlines. Perhaps there will be a "Victory" among them.

It seems that it is much more possible to reduce the space for one passenger in economy class? But the Italian company Aviointeriors Group has proposed a scandalous innovation: vertical seats for standing passengers. Such unusual places resemble a rider's saddle, leaning on which you can "sit standing". Well, and at the same time fly.

This is not the first attempt by Aviointeriors, a leading Italian manufacturer of equipment for aircraft salons, to turn an airplane into a minibus: in 2010, the company already offered something similar, but the prototype was sent for revision.

This is how the first Skyrider prototype looked 8 years ago, the model of which was sent for revision

The updated model of vertical seats, which was named Skyrider 2.0, was presented last week in Hamburg at the international exhibition Aircraft Interiors Expo 2018.

Thanks to the soft upholstery at hip level, a passenger in such a seat with two armrests can stand leaning and not experiencing discomfort on short flights.

The Italian company claims that the weight of such standing seat-saddles is two times less than that of standard seats, and their use makes it possible to compact the seating of passengers in the cabin by 20%.

For comparison: now the smallest "step" between the seats is at the British low—cost airline easyJet: it is 29 inches (73.66 cm).

It is assumed that Skyrider 2.0 standing seats will be in demand from budget airlines for short-distance flights. In June last year, the Colombian airline VivaColombia was already interested in them. And the head of the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair, Michael O'Leary, called the Italian novelty "bar stools with seat belts" back in 2010, while noting that belts were not actually needed there.
