In someone else's clothes

By Pictolic https://mail.pictolic.com/article/in-someone-else39s-clothes.htmlPhotographer Caleb Cole says: “At the heart of my work is a fascination with ambiguity and contradiction. In public places, I often watch people as they run about their business, I reflect on what kind of life they live, how they perceive the world around them and how they understand its meaning. I make up stories about them: stories of alienation, questions and searching, stories of desire and confusion. The photographs in my project Wearing Strange Clothes are the result of my exploration of personal moments of waiting, a visual expression of my experience of being in the shoes of the other people I see every day.”

1. Each shot in the project is a recreation of a scene that starts with clothes (usually bought, found or borrowed) and ends with a person who, in my opinion, should fill these clothes. And finally, I choose a suitable place in which this person could retire.

2. This moment of solitude usually comes before any change, when a person holds his breath and waits, preparing for what lies ahead.

3. And although I am the only subject in the photographs, I would not call these self-portraits.

4. These are portraits of people whom I have never met, but who are familiar to me.

5. It is also a process in which I try on other people's transitional moments in order to better understand myself.
