The transformation project was launched by 54-year-old school principal Slamet Widodo, inspired by the changes in three other cities in Indonesia.
The Central Java community, located in the southern city of Semarang, has turned 232 houses into works of art to rid the slum of its status as a deprived area. The authorities spent $ 22,467 on this.
The art project gave the village an impetus for development: tourists found out that there were colorful villages in Indonesia, and rushed there, including to Kampung Pelangi.
The investment made in the artists will certainly pay off: local businesses have already grown their income from selling souvenirs and food. We're not talking about how good the new views are for Instagram shots.
