In Axel Lindahl's 1889 photograph, you can see the base of the glacier, where only ice, glacial gravel, water, and bare rocks are visible in a seemingly cold and hostile landscape. Now, more than 120 years later, the valley has become much more fertile. A birch forest, coastal meadows, willow thickets and swamps appeared, and the glacier retreated back to the mountainside.
