Mercedes-Benz 300SL is a sports car released in 1954 in a two-seater coupe body with unique doors of the "Seagull Wing" type, and inspired by the W194 racing car. In these retro photos, the legendary Sophia Loren poses with her brand new 300SL in Rome.

Mercedes-Benz W198 (aka 300SL) — the first sports car from Mercedes-Benz in the post-war period. It was first introduced in 1954 in New York as a street version of the W194 racing car. At first, the 300SL was produced in a two-seat coupe body with unique "Gull Wing" doors, but in 1957 an open version was released — a roadster.

Capable of a top speed of up to 263 km/h, the 300SL was both a champion of sports racing and the fastest car of its time.
