British artist Sue Austin has been confined to a wheelchair since 1996. However, she did not want to live the normal life of a wheelchair user. She is engaged in multimedia, installation art and performance, using her wheelchair as a means to explore new movement patterns. This underwater performance of hers was filmed near the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. Have you ever seen such a thing? Dreams come true!
In 2012, Austin was commissioned to create a series of multimedia projects as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad in connection with the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The result, titled "Creating a Performance!" is a spectacular, exciting dance performance and underwater exploration that was filmed near Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt.
Her underwater wheelchair is made from a standard National Health Service wheelchair, supplemented with battery-powered propellers and perspex wings to control turns.
Austin hopes that this version of the chair will become widely available in diving centers in the future to make diving a popular form of entertainment for all people with different abilities.
