The California Department of Health has issued a warning that smartphones should be kept at least an arm's length away when going to bed to reduce radiation exposure. The announcement comes amid growing evidence that smartphone use may be associated with cancer, problems with concentration, mental health and the reproductive system.

Mobile phones transmit information using low-frequency radio signals, which can be dangerous to humans, especially when transferring or downloading files.

While research cannot prove a clear connection between diseases and smartphones, enough tests have been conducted to warn users and especially children about their dangers.

Experts recommend keeping smartphones at least one to two meters away from the bed.

In fact, the gadget manufacturers themselves agree with this. For example, Apple has included a “radio frequency detection” notification in settings. The notice states that the iPhone's emissions were tested at a distance of 5 millimeters (the thickness of a ballpoint pen) from the body, which meets US safety standards.

Apple also advises how to reduce radiation - use a speakerphone or a headset.

The California Department of Health warns that low-frequency radio signals penetrate the brains of children much more easily than adults, which can cause damage or long-term effects on brain development.
