The shoot was organized by the Newfoundland and Labrador Beard & Moustache Club, a club dedicated to beard and moustache, where those who appreciate facial hair are welcome. The money received from the sale of the calendar will go to Spirit Horse NL, a mental health organization that deals with hippotherapy.

The idea for the Merb'ys calendar came to the founder of Newfoundland and Labrador Beard & Moustache Club Hassan Hai. He was inspired by the photo shoot of "Rusal", which was sent to him by a friend on Facebook.
After that, Hai decided to publish a call for bearded brutals to participate in a photo shoot in the images of mermaids. Despite the strange request, Hai received about 80 responses.
The name "Merb'ys" comes from a combination of the words "mermaid" and "b'y" (which means "boy" in "Newfoundland slang").
