The name of the photo project is taken from a poem by Pablo Neruda called "Night on the Island". The series of photographs intersperse pictures of Maureen's husband and photos of Block Island and Rhode Island - the places where she spent her childhood. The desolation and isolation of the island is both a physical embodiment of the distance she felt in her relationship with her husband, and a tangible metaphor for the inner world of her spouse during depression.
Now this difficult time is over for Maureen and her husband, but the pictures remain a reminder of human vulnerability and how difficult it is to truly understand the experiences of another person, no matter how close you are.
