Freund lived with Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera in Mexico City after fleeing the political regime and tensions in Argentina. The year was 1950 and Frida Kahlo's health had taken a turn for the worse, largely due to a series of botched spinal cord surgeries she had undergone. She was also mentally and emotionally unwell, and her art became dark and macabre. But her clothes, however, remained colorful and eccentric. Although it was a dark time for Kahlo, Gisele Freund's photographs conveyed a dedication to her work that she held until her very last breath.
Frida Kahlo died at home in July 1954, just years after Gisele Freund returned to Paris. Photos of Frida Kahlo were published in 2015.
