Loneliness in Bulgarian
Photographer Boryana Katsarova was born in 1981 in Bulgaria. She started taking photography at the age of 15. From 2007 to 2010, Boryana worked as a photographer for Agence France-Presse, shooting news reports. In 2010, following her dream, Boryana became a freelance photographer. Now she takes pictures for such publications as The New York Times, Le Monde, Paris Match, Foreign Policy and others.

Lonely Bulgaria" is a long—term documentary photo project about life in small villages of my native country, about the severe demographic crisis. First of all, "Lonely Bulgaria" is a project about people," says Boryana.
Bulgaria, located in the eastern part of the Balkan peninsula, is going through a difficult change of political and economic formation, the transition from socialism to a market economy. Founded in 681, Bulgaria is one of the oldest states in Europe. In 2007, the country became a member of the European Union.
